Power of friction

Friction is the force resisting the relative motion of solid surfaces, fluid layers, and material elements sliding against each other. In this experiment the large surface area of the inter-connected leaves of paper result in a high normal force between them and preventing them from being separated. The force of friction is directly proportional to the normal force (net force compressing two parallel surfaces together) and coefficient of friction and is independent of the area of contact.

The coefficient of friction is a dimensionless scalar value which describes the ratio of the force of friction between two bodies and the force pressing them together. The coefficient of friction depends on the materials used.
